The Therapeutic Use of Symbol, Image & Metaphor

The focus of the workshop is how to facilitate the non-verbal expressions of the right hemisphere, and how to discover meaning in the symbolic and metaphorical language of the right-hemisphere. The material is applicable to a wide variety of clinical populations and clinical issues.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn ways to facilitate and contain expression in the use of the arts in therapy for children, teens and families. A portion of the workshop offers the opportunity to experiment with art and play media to learn skills in facilitating, containing and dialoguing with the metaphorical communication elicited through the creative arts.

The experiential sessions are designed to be safe and private.

Participants will be able to:

  1. describe the role of symbols, images and metaphors in therapy
  2. describe methods of utilizing the symbols, images and metaphors in the assessment and treatment , and
  3. describe methods of incorporating the creative arts in play therapy for a variety of populations and presenting issues in play therapy.
