This day long workshop is designed to offer clinicians and graduate level students a learning experience applicable to a wide variety of clinical populations, in both individual and group therapy formats. The focus of the workshop will be on facilitating expression and the subsequent understanding of the symbolic and metaphorical language of the creative arts in play therapy.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn many applications of art, music, movement, and drama therapy techniques for use in schools, community, and clinical settings. The material presented will offer methods of incorporating the creative arts in play therapy for children, teens and families who have experienced loss, trauma and violence, behavioral problems, and family issues.

 

A portion of the workshop will offer those attending the opportunity to experiment with art and play media through role play and experiential exercises that will offer skills in facilitating, containing and dialoguing with the metaphorical communication, images, and symbols that are elicited through the creative arts. No experience in the arts in necessary, and all activities are designed to be safe, comfortable, and non-threatening.

Objectives:
Attendees will be able to:

  • describe the similarities and differences of the creative arts and play therapy,

  • describe methods of utilizing the creative arts in assessment and treatment planning, and

  • describe methods of incorporating the creative arts in play therapy for a variety of populations and presenting issues in play therapy

CE Credits:  20 CE Credits will be offered for the following:  MFT, LCSW, RN, LVN, Psychologist (APA)
                                  

Instructor: Linda Chapman, MA, is a board certified art therapist and registered play therapist-supervisor. Currently Director of the Art Therapy Institute of the Redwoods, she a former Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry, University of California San Francisco and creator and director of the She San Francisco General Hospital Pediatric Play Therapy Program. Linda has over eighteen years of clinical and supervisory experience and is a nationally recognized expert in art therapy and play therapy with severely traumatized, hospitalized children, adolescents and families.
