Attachment Disorders
Physical and Psychological Trauma
Physical and Sexual Abuse
Reactions to Illness and Hospitalization
Witness to Violence
The recognition of the importance of early psychological intervention
and prevention services for children has enabled greater numbers of
young children to receive psychological care. The very young child often
baffles even the experienced clinician, with a limited or lack of
language, short attention span, and abundant motor activity. Greater
numbers of young children are at risk from violence, abuse, and multiple
transitions and losses, and attachment problems. New approaches to
assessing and treating this population will be presented, along with
methods of engaging young children and parents in the therapeutic
process.
The course will focus on the use of art media and toys in the assessment
and treatment of children from infancy through the pre-school years.
Lectures and case presentations will demonstrate the use of art therapy
and play therapy for a variety of presenting problems. Material covered
will include early intervention strategies for infants and parents for
attachment disorders, trauma, abuse, illness and hospitalization and
witnessing or experiencing violence.
Experimentation with art medial will allow attendees to learn methods of
engaging young children in art and play activities, and how to
facilitate expression and healing. No prior art training required.
