This day long workshop is designed to offer knowledge and skills in the use of drawings and art making in family therapy. Following a description of family art therapy and general considerations about the use of art media with families, the workshop will focus on the practical application of a variety of assessment and treatment interventions. Attendees will learn how to introduce art making to families in therapy, how to utilize drawings and art media in the assessment of family roles, alliances, differentiation, communication patterns and parenting styles. Learning will include how to integrate drawings and art making into treatment for a variety of presenting issues in family therapy, and directive interventions for dysfunctional family patterns and interactions.
 

Role play will offer attendees the opportunity to experience and/or observe several demonstrations of the material presented.

Objectives:

Attendees will be able to:

  • Describe general considerations essential in facilitating family art therapy,

  • describe assessment and evaluation techniques using art media, and  

  • describe a variety of treatment interventions for use in family art therapy.

Instructor: Linda Chapman, MA, is a board certified art therapist and registered play therapist-supervisor. Currently Director of the Art Therapy Institute of the Redwoods, she a former Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry, University of California San Francisco and creator and director of the She San Francisco General Hospital Pediatric Play Therapy Program. Linda has over eighteen years of clinical and supervisory experience and is a nationally recognized expert in art therapy and play therapy with severely traumatized, hospitalized children, adolescents and families.
