This presentation is designed to introduce
participants to the therapeutic use of art therapy and play therapy with
a variety of adolescent populations, and provide skills to facilitate
expression, awareness and change with this often resistant and
challenging group.
Participants will gain theoretical knowledge of the developmental,
psychological and neurobiological theories of stress, trauma and
violence, and how to implement a new paradigm of assessing and treating
adolescents consistent with these theories. Non-threatening techniques
for culturally sensitive therapy will be presented for treating
substance abuse, trauma, loss and violence, and techniques for violence
prevention.
Lecture and slide case presentations will illustrate the practical
application of the material presented, and will apply to a variety of
adolescent populations including psychiatric facilities, schools and
medical hospitals. Group and individual formats of treatment will be
presented.
Safe, non-threatening experimentation with art media allows the
participants to gain practical knowledge in the use of symbols and
imagery as methods of healing.
