Established in 1992, the Art Therapy Institute of the Redwoods offers clinical education, supervision and consultation for mental health practicioners, and a variety of group and individual art therapy opportunities for those seeking support for medical illness, stress reduction, parenting, elder care, and other issues.

Although not a degree granting entity, the Institute offers trainings in child and family art therapy for a variety of professionals, including creative arts therapists, nurses, social workers, psychotherapists, psychologists, school counselors, and play therapists.  The lectures and workshops offer theoretical and practical knowledge in the assessment and treatment of infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents, and families. Many of the workshops focus on topics related to acute and chronic trauma across the developmental spectrum. Workshops are offered to heal secondary post-traumatic stress for caregivers treating abuse and trauma. Directive and non-directive methods of treatment based on developmental, psychological and neurobiological theories are presented for effective, culturally sensitive therapy.

Lectures, case presentations, and experiential creative arts sessions are utilized as teaching methods. Experiential sessions are designed to be safe, confidential, and non-threatening ways to experiment with media, and develop skills to facilitate expression using art and imagery as healing methods. No prior art training is required. Continuing Education credits are available for the clinical trainings.

Additionally, the Art Therapy Institute of the Redwoods is committed to offering services to members of the community who desire art therapy for a variety of physical, psychological and emotional difficulties, and/or participation in support groups and studio art-making. Summer adult and children’s art programs are planned, and will be announced at a later date. Please see the Workshop section of the web site for a complete listing of clinical and public offerings.
